Film Camera Setup Guide

Welcome to your Ilford Sprite 35-II from The Minimal Studio.

Your camera has been prepared and tested prior to pickup, with film and battery already loaded unless otherwise discussed. One spare AAA battery is also included with your hire.

This camera is intentionally simple to use - no menus, screens or complicated settings. Just point, shoot and enjoy the process.

Unlike digital photography, film captures moments a little more slowly and intentionally. Some images may come out perfectly crisp, others slightly blurry, grainy or unexpectedly framed. That unpredictability is part of what makes film photography feel nostalgic and memorable to revisit later on.

Taking photos

Using the camera is intentionally very straightforward.

  1. Look through the viewfinder
  2. Press the Shutter Button to take a photo
  3. Turn the Film Advance Wheel until it stops
  4. Repeat

Advancing the film after every photo is important. If the film is not advanced, multiple photos may accidentally overlap on the same frame.

Using the flash

The camera includes a built-in flash.

We generally recommend keeping the flash switched on for the majority of events, even during daytime use. Film cameras typically perform best with plenty of light, and using flash helps create the nostalgic, direct-flash look that people often associate with disposable and film photography.

To turn the flash on slide the Flash Switch towards the edge of the camera.

Without flash, photos may appear darker, softer or blurrier depending on lighting conditions.

The flash requires a charged battery to operate correctly.

Film & battery

Your hire includes:

  • film already loaded into the camera
  • one installed AAA battery
  • one spare AAA battery

The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the camera.

If the flash stops firing or becomes inconsistent, the battery may need replacing.

To replace the battery:

  1. Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the camera
  2. Remove the existing AAA battery
  3. Insert the new battery following the polarity markings
  4. Close the compartment securely

Replacing the film

If your film roll runs out during your hire, it is possible to load a new roll of 35mm film.

However, unless you already feel comfortable loading film cameras, we generally recommend leaving this step to us where possible.

Film loading can be slightly fiddly, and incorrectly loaded film may result in blank or partially exposed images.

If you do choose to replace the film:

Press the small release button on the bottom of the camera

Use the Film Rewind Crank to rewind the film fully back into the canister

Continue rewinding until the tension releases and the rewind feels loose

Open the Film Compartment on the back of the camera

Remove the finished film roll

Place the new roll of 35mm film into the left side of the compartment

Pull the film leader across to the take-up side

Insert the tip of the film into one of the slots on the take-up spool

Gently turn the Film Advance Wheel to confirm the film catches correctly

Close the back of the camera securely

Press the shutter and advance the film until the frame counter reaches the starting position

If the rewind crank rotates slightly while advancing the film, the film has likely been loaded correctly.

Important

Never force the Film Advance Wheel

Do not open the Film Compartment until the film has been fully rewound

Opening the camera mid-roll will expose and ruin the film

A few helpful tips

The best film photos are usually the least staged

Film tends to look nicest in softer natural light

Encourage guests to pass the camera around throughout the event

Flash photography often creates the nostalgic “film camera” look people love most

Don’t worry too much about perfection -candid, imperfect moments are often the most meaningful later on

Part of the charm of film is not knowing exactly what you captured until the photos are developed.

Returning the camera

Please return the camera with the film still inside, even if the roll is finished.

Your hire package includes the development and scanning of one roll of film per camera unless otherwise discussed prior to your event.

Once returned the film will be professionally developed, scans will be prepared and your images will be delivered digitally afterward

If additional film rolls are used during your hire, additional development charges may apply unless arranged in advance.

If you run into any issues during your hire period, please contact Bridget at The Minimal Studio and we’ll do our best to help.
